Chapter 14: The Walk-In
Dominik's POV
I fed forty loaves of her rye to my staff on Monday.
I laid them out on the long table at family meal, torn open, with a block of cultured butter and a knife.
Thirty cooks, servers and dishwashers came in and sat down and looked at them.
Nobody touched the bread.
They looked at me.
"Eat," I said.
The big sous chef reached out first.
He tore off a heel and chewed, and his eyes closed for a second.
"That's Hal's," he said.
"Yes."
"Chef."
"Eat," I said again. "Then I have to say some things."
They ate.
The room made the small, private sound of thirty people who are hungry and ashamed of it.
I waited until the plates were clean.
Then I stood up.
"Three things," I said. "The first is that every dessert on this menu was written by Halina Sokol. Every one. The babka tart, the poppy seed cake, the brown butter plum, all of it. I let somebody else's name sit on it for a year and I knew it was wrong."
Nobody looked at Lena.
Everybody did not look at Lena.
"The second is that starting tonight, the printed menu says so. I'm paying for the reprint myself."
"Danny," Lena said.
She sat three seats down, with a folder in front of her.
She had not eaten any bread.
"Not now," I said.
"Yes, now."
She stood up and put the folder on the table and smoothed it with one hand.
"Dominik, you should know I spoke to Kral's counsel on Friday. They've prepared a letter to protect the company's intellectual property. It went out Saturday morning, on my authorization, as general manager."
"You authorized it."
"On behalf of the company," Lena said.
"You don't speak for the company," I said.
