On the eighteenth of October I baked a poppy seed cake.
It was round and glazed.

Marta had stayed late to wipe the cases.
When she saw the cake she put the rag down and went straight out the back door.
"I'm walking to the car," she said. "I'm not hearing anything."

Dominik came at six.
He wore a dark green sweater and carried a paper bag from the diner.
He had left the diner in May.
Now he ran the breakfast line at a small place on Halsted, where his name was not on the window.
He set the bag on the counter.
