Chapter 14: The Leash

Gabe's POV

My brother came in through the front door without knocking, the way he has since he was nine.

He was smiling.

He crossed the kitchen to Kaitlyn and kissed her forehead.

She did not move, and I watched her not move.

"There you are, wife," Glen said. "Get your bag. We're going home."

"No," Kaitlyn said.

"You've had your week."

"I haven't had anything."

"Kaitlyn." He said it kindly, in the voice that makes waiters feel they have been heard. "You're upset, and that's fair. Mother saw something I'd have liked her not to see. We'll talk about it in the car."

"I'm not getting in your car."

"Then you'll walk."

"Yes," she said. "I will."

She picked her bag up off the floor.

She did not look at me.

At the door she turned around and spoke to my mother.

"Saturday," she said. "I'll bring my sister."

Helen's face did not change.

Glen's did, for about a second.

Then Kaitlyn was out the door, and I heard her heels on the walk, and her car start.

My mother put the cake box in the refrigerator and wiped her hands.

She said she had a headache and went upstairs.

That left the two of us in the kitchen.

"I never raised my voice at you, did I?" Glen said. "Not once, in thirty-six years."

"No."

"I want you to notice that."

"I notice it," I said. "It's the worst thing about you."

He laughed, and he leaned on the counter and turned the watch on his wrist.
