Chapter 20: Family Man of the Year

Kaitlyn's POV

I wore the yellow dress.

I had not planned to. It hung in the back of the loft closet, where I had shoved it the week I moved out.

Gabe saw it in the doorway and went very still.

"You remember it," I said.

"I remember the gravy."

"Good. Tonight there won't be any."

Mindy came out of the bathroom in a green dress she had bought that afternoon with cash.

Her dark blond hair was pinned up with a pencil, the way it was in the old photograph.

The three of us looked at one another.

"We look like a family," Mindy said.

"We look like a hostage negotiation," said Gabe.

She laughed, and her wrist went up, and mine did, and Gabe put a hand over his own mouth and pretended to do it too.

The Davenport ballroom held thirty round tables under a gold chandelier.

A banner over the stage said INLAND WINDOW & DOOR, FAMILY MAN OF THE YEAR.

Under it in smaller letters: GLEN ROARK.

"Jesus," Mindy said under her breath.

"Walk," I said.

We walked in together.

Heads turned at the first tables, then the next.

A woman with a lanyard looked at her clipboard and then at my face and let us by without a word.

Glen's table stood near the stage.

He sat at it in a charcoal suit, between a white-haired woman in a gray silk blouse and a man with a gold pin on his lapel.

The white-haired woman was the owner of the company.

I had met her at the Christmas party two years ago.

She had told me my husband was the most reliable man she had ever employed.

He saw us.

Nothing moved in his face for a long second.
