Chapter 6: The Box in the Drawer

Haoran looked at the photograph for the fourth time and still could not find a flaw in it.

It was well shot. Whoever had taken it knew exactly where to stand at the studio gate, and exactly when his hand would be on her back.

Wenxin had sent it at midnight with one line: Someone is following us.

He had answered: Go to bed. I'll handle it.

He had not slept.

"The number is dead," his head of security said, standing in front of the desk at seven. "A prepaid card, bought and thrown away the same day."

"The photographer?"

"A freelancer. I paid his landlord a visit." The man laid a sheet of paper on the desk. "He gave up his client's invoice after some persuasion."

Haoran read it.

It was a retainer for three months. The payer was a household management company in the name of the Gu family.

He knew the company. His stepmother paid the gardeners through it.

"There's a line at the bottom," the security chief said.

Haoran found it.

Retainer ends on the date of the Letters Under Snow premiere. Hold all material until then.

He sat back in his chair.

"Buy his files," he said. "All of them. Pay triple, and have him sign something that says he never owned them."

"And his client?"

"His client doesn't hear from either of us."
