Chapter 10: Hungry

Lucas opened the door on the chain.

The courier on the stoop was a narrow man in a grey coat who held a sealed envelope in two gloved hands.

He did not look at the chain, or at the three men standing behind Lucas in the hall.

"Lord Abysis requests the human's presence at the opera house on Saturday at midnight," he said. "Alone."

"No."

"I do not believe you have read..."

"I read the card." Lucas held out his hand through the gap. "Give me the letter."

The courier passed it over.

It was heavy paper, sealed in black wax.

Lucas broke the seal and read the single line inside.

Come and be seen, or the exiles will be brought to you.

He folded it once.

"Tell your lord," Lucas said, "that the band's management office is closed until Monday. If he would like to arrange a meeting, he can call during business hours. He can bring a lawyer."

The courier blinked.

"I will convey this."

"Convey it politely."

"Lord Abysis does not..."

"Good night," Lucas said, and shut the door in his face.

Nobody spoke.

Thomas stared at him with his mouth open.

"You told the lord of the vampires to call during business hours," Thomas said.

"He can leave a message."

Luke made a sound that on anyone else would have been a laugh.

The show that night was at a smaller club, forty minutes across the city, and Lucas worked the door himself.

He checked the take, signed the receipts, and watched the three of them play.

Something was wrong with Thomas.

It was small.

He came in half a beat late on the third song, and he held the sticks too tight, and between songs he stared at the floor.

Lucas put it down to nerves, and then, on the way to the van, he saw Thomas's hands.

They were shaking.

They were shaking the same way they had on the first night, when he'd knocked on Lucas's door.
