Chapter 11: Good Boy

Luke was waiting at the kitchen counter with his hands flat on the marble and his back to the room.

Lucas came in barefoot and still shaking from the hall.

He leaned against the doorframe.

"Say it," he said.

Luke did not turn around.

"I was the one who proposed it," he said. "Not Noah. Not Thomas. They think it was a shared idea, and I let them."

"Proposed what?"

"Finding a human." Luke's voice was low and level. "A fan. Someone who liked us for the songs. We had been cold for five months, Lucas. Thomas had stopped eating the food he pretended to eat. Noah couldn't write. I went through the old guest lists and the fan mail and the merch records, and I picked a name."

"Whose?"

"Yours."

Lucas stood very still.

"You came to every show for two years," Luke said. "You paid for a ticket you didn't need, because you worked the table. You wrote the label once to say the sound was too loud in the back. You were kind to the door staff. I watched you for eight weeks before you ever saw me."

"That's..."

"I know what it is. I know how it sounds." Luke turned.

His hazel eyes were grim, and the scar through his eyebrow stood out white.

"I picked you before I knew you. I told Noah to push the old manager until he quit, on a night you were working the door. I did that. I'm sorry."

"You made him quit?"

"I made it easy for him. It wasn't hard." Luke's mouth twisted. "That's the part I should have told you on the first night. The rest is a longer story, and Noah wants to tell it, so I'll leave it. But this part is mine."

Lucas crossed the kitchen slowly.

The anger he'd felt in the hall had worn down.

What was left was a sore, bright feeling, and under it something else.
