Chapter 6: Freely Chosen

Lucas walked onto the stage in front of nine hundred people and put his hand flat on Thomas's snare.

"Count it in," he said quietly.

Thomas stared at him.

"Count it in. Glass Hours. Now."

The sticks came down in four sharp clicks.

Luke's bass came in on the fifth, and Noah, white to the lips, found the microphone and sang.

The crowd screamed the chorus back, and no one in the Gilt Room knew anything had gone wrong.

When Lucas looked up at the VIP booth again, the man in velvet was gone.

His glass stood on the rail, still full.

Afterward, in the van, nobody talked.

Noah stared out the window, his jaw tight.

"Who was that?" Lucas asked.

"Later," Noah said. "Please. I'll tell you tomorrow."

Lucas looked at him for a moment.

Rule three said nobody decided alone, and he had meant it.

He had not meant that anyone had to answer in a van.

"Tomorrow," he agreed. "First thing."

Noah put his head back against the seat.

At the brownstone, Lucas went up the stoop and unlocked the red door, and this time he said it before they asked.

"Come in."

Thomas was the last one up the steps.

He touched Lucas's sleeve at the top.

"Can I have tonight?" he asked. "Just me. I know that's not how it works, we take turns, but..."

"Thomas."

"I never got to choose one," Thomas said in a rush. "I was told. Everything. Who I sat next to, who I touched, what I was hungry for. And you said it was free, and I want to spend the first one that's only mine on you. If that's all right."

Lucas took his hand.

"It's all right," he said.

They went upstairs together, and the other two did not follow.

In the bedroom Thomas stood in the middle of the floor with his hands hanging.

"I don't know what to do," he said. "Last night it was easy. Everyone was touching everyone. Now it's quiet."

"Then I'll go first."

Lucas drew his shirt over his head and let it drop.

Thomas's eyes went down his chest and back up.
