Chapter 9: Lucan: The Law That Kept Me Out
Lucan's POV
For a year I had known exactly where she was, and I had not gone to her.
A scout on the Graymoor border had written to me every second Sunday, and I had kept every page in a drawer.
The law said a prince may not enter another pack's land unless the ward herself asks, and her letter had finally asked.
Now I was standing in the kitchen corridor of my own palace at eleven at night, looking at a tray.
A cup of dark tea sat on it with a lid over the top, and I could smell the moonroot from ten feet away.
"Whose tray is this?" I asked.
The kitchen boy holding it went the color of flour.
"Her Highness's evening tonic, sir. The Duke's secretary said it was a Graymoor recipe, and to take it up himself so it wouldn't go cold."
"The Duke's secretary."
"Yes, sir."
I took the tray out of his hands.
I did not shout, because he was fifteen and he did not know what he had carried.
"Go back to the kitchen," I said. "If anyone asks, you delivered it. Tell no one I stopped you."
He went.
I poured the cup into a clean glass jar and screwed the lid on, and I handed it to the nearest guard with an order to bring it to the healer.
