Chapter 20: The Ring in the Glass
Cora's POV
I answered Tobias's question an hour later, in the hall outside my studio.
"Yes," I said. "To the rest, too."
He did not smile at first. He pulled me against his chest and held on, with his chin on my hair, until I felt him breathe out.
Then we went to Rodrick's engagement party together.
The Lowell Design floor was lit up with white flowers and a banner that read CONGRATULATIONS RODRICK & KELSEY.
The invitation had gone to eighty people.
Fourteen had come.
They stood in small knots around the bar with their drinks, and a cousin was quietly eating the canapés alone.
Rodrick stood at the front of the room in his good suit, with a champagne flute he had not touched.
He saw me and put it down.
"You came," he said.
"You said you had something."
"I do." He swallowed. "But I want to do this first, in front of everyone. Will you let me?"
I looked at Tobias. He shrugged one shoulder, which meant it was my call.
"Fine," I said.
"Thank you."
Rodrick tapped a spoon against a glass.
The fourteen turned to look.
"I want to say something," he said, and his voice shook. "I took Cora's work, I took her money, and I let my mother take the rest. I knew what the Pembroke was. I let four hundred people clap anyway."
