Chapter 10: Twelve Years Ago

Phillip's POV

I drove to my parents' house at nine in the morning with Hallie's voice in my head.

You killed me.

I should have called her a liar. I should have stood in that kitchen and told her it was impossible.

I couldn't, because she had said it in my own words.

It was supposed to be a joke. I had thought that sentence forty times since the hospital, and I had never said it to a soul.

I parked in front of the house and sat there with my hands on the wheel.

I had pulled up to this house every day of my life. I knew every window.

I went inside.

My father sat at the breakfast table in the sunroom with coffee and the newspaper. My mother sat across from him with her tea and did not look up.

"Phillip," my father said, warm as ever. "Come, sit. The cook made the eggs you like."

"I'm not hungry."

"You look pale." He folded the paper. "Is it your head again?"

"It's not my head."

I stayed standing. My mother's cup stopped halfway to her lips.

"Dad. Tell me about the night before the SAT."

"What about it?"

"The old mechanic says he never touched my car. He says your assistant took the keys to his shop and was alone with the car for two hours."

The room was quiet.

My father's face did not change. I watched it very closely.

"That's not what he told the police," he said.

"It's what he told me."

"Then he's an old man, and old men get confused." He picked up his coffee. "My assistant took the car in for a rush check. I asked him to. Is that a crime?"
