Chapter 15: The Card

I was drying the last plate when Colt came in from the shed.

He had gone white around the mouth.

He held out his phone without a word.

I read Sonya's message twice.

Below it was a thumbnail of a hotel hallway, with Colt in the doorway and her hand on his chest.

"I don't care about the video," I said. "I watched you kiss her on live television. I can survive a hallway."

"It's the kids' names."

"I know."

"She'll put them on the story, Lin. Their faces will go out with it."

I set the plate down on the rack.

I had spent eleven days believing nothing could get to my children inside my grandfather's walls, and now they were asleep in a bungalow with one bad lock.

"She wants my signature on the renewal," I said. "She won't get it."

"I know that too."

"Then what are you going to do?"

"Let me show you something first."

He pulled his wallet from his back pocket and took out a folded piece of paper, soft at the creases from being opened too many times.

He put it on the counter and smoothed it flat with two fingers.

It was the back of a room-service menu.

The writing was his, in block capitals, and the ink had smeared where a thumb had rubbed it.

LINNEA. SAY HER NAME. THEN SAY THE SONGS ARE HERS.

I read it.

Then I read it again, slowly, because I did not trust the first time.
