Chapter 5: Lantern Records
Lantern Records had a glass lobby, a wall of gold albums and a receptionist who had been told to keep me out.
I could tell by how quickly she stood up.
"Mrs. Hargis, I'm sorry, Mr. Colt isn't in the building. And Miss Pettigrew has asked that no one go up without an appointment."
"I'm not here for Colt," I said. "Or for Miss Pettigrew."
"Then who would you like me to say?"
"Linnea Averill."
She looked at me.
Behind her, three people at the glass desks stopped typing at the same moment.
"Averill," she said.
"I'll wait here. Please tell the president that the chairman's granddaughter is standing in his lobby."
She made the call in a whisper, and she did not whisper it well.
By the time the elevator opened, the whole floor above us had found a reason to lean over the railing.
The president of the label came out with his jacket half buttoned.
He was a tall, anxious man in his fifties who had shaken my hand at three Christmas parties and never once remembered my name.
He remembered it now.
"Mrs. Hargis. Ms. Averill. I had no idea. Whatever we can do. Would you like to come upstairs?"
"Here is fine."
He glanced at the railing, at the staff, at the receptionist holding her phone with both hands.
"Here is fine," he agreed.
I took the papers from my bag.
Grandfather's lawyers had sent them to the estate by courier the night before, with a short note in Grandfather's own handwriting that said only: Your hand, your terms.
