Chapter 9: Salt
Linnea's POV
Colt came back to Charleston on Saturday morning, on foot from the gate, carrying two halves of a torn piece of paper.
The gardeners were already at work along the drive.
They stopped.
Three housekeepers appeared on the porch with a tray of lemonade nobody had asked for.
I came down the steps and met him on the gravel, with the guard a respectful ten feet behind him.
"I didn't call ahead," Colt said. "I thought you'd say no."
"I would have."
"So I came to show you this in front of people."
He held up the two halves.
The paper was typed, three pages thick, and he had torn it down the middle with great care, so the page numbers lined up.
"It's a statement addendum," he said. "I signed it in March without reading it. It says Sonya approves every word I say in public. She approves every word I say on stage."
"And you tore it up."
"I tore up this one. She has another. But I want every person here to know I did it, and I want you to know I'll tear up the next one too."
He dropped the pieces on the gravel at my feet.
Then he did not say another word, which was so unlike him that I stared.
A housekeeper behind me made a small, approving sound.
I looked down at the paper.
"Mr. Hargis," I said. "The children are in the kitchen."
"I know. I'm not asking to see them."
"Colt."
"I'm not," he said. "I came to tear up a paper. I'll go."
He turned toward the gate.
"Daddy!"
Birdie stood in the open door of the house in her yellow raincoat, with flour still in her braids.
