Chapter 4: The Lawn

I put on Roan's white shirt, because it was the nearest thing, and I went down to the dock.

Roan came behind me in his trousers with his chest bare.

He didn't touch me.

He stopped three steps back and said, "Your call."

I walked out onto the grass.

It was past midnight, and the lawn lights turned everything yellow.

Reed saw me and almost fell down.

"Sutton. Oh, thank God." He came at me with both hands out. "You look... that's his shirt."

"It's his shirt."

His arms dropped.

"Listen to me," he said. "I came to get you. We can leave right now. My truck's on Pier Street. I'll drive all night. Whatever your dad did, we'll figure it out, and you don't have to stay married to a man you don't know."

"I know him a little better than I did at four."

He flinched.

Behind me the boathouse door banged.

Nash came across the lawn in a pair of sweatpants, scratching his head, and behind him the Eyebrow and the Silent One in shirts they hadn't buttoned.

They stopped in a loose half circle ten feet back.

Nobody said anything.

Reed looked at them and swallowed.

"I need to talk to my girlfriend," he said.

"She's not," said Nash, pleasantly.

"Reed," I said.

He turned back.

His eyes were glassy, and he smelled like gin and cheap cologne, and I tried to see in him the boy who held my hair, and I couldn't.

I could only see the video.

"I'm going to ask you one thing," I said. "And you're going to answer it in front of them."

"Anything."

"Who picked the dare?"

He opened his mouth.

"It was a game, Sutton. We were all drinking."

"Whose idea was it to film it?"

"I don't remember."

"It was sent to the class chat at eight-oh-nine this morning," I said. "From Camryn's phone. In a party dress. In a kitchen with a window in the background that has the morning sun in it. Last night was a graduation party at eleven p.m."
