Chapter 20: The Fund

The parish hall smelled of tuna casserole and floor wax.

A hundred and forty people sat at long tables with paper plates.

At the front stood a podium with a glitter banner that said Linwood Family Fund.

I stood at the back, next to Alec, with my mother's arm through mine.

"This is the most American thing I've ever seen," Alec said, very quietly.

"Wait for the pie."

Marissa sat at the head table in her white cardigan.

The pastor sat on one side of her, and a woman in a navy suit on the other.

I had never seen the woman before.

"Hospital," my mother murmured. "The vice president of something. They gave the coats."

At seven the pastor tapped the microphone.

He talked about winter and kindness and the gift of showing up.

Then he said that our Friend of the Family had a few words.

Marissa rose to a round of applause and took the podium with both hands.

She was very good.

She spoke about a mother whose daughter had gone abroad, and a hip that wouldn't heal.

She spoke about a casserole left on a doorstep every Sunday for three years.

She did not mention me by name, and she did not need to.

Half the hall turned its head to look at the empty chair by my mother's place.

Then she said the Fund had raised fourteen thousand dollars in three years, and that she was only the keeper of it.

"I'd like to hand it to Mrs. Linwood tonight," she said, "in front of all of you, so everyone can see it go where it was meant."

She took a thick envelope from her bag and held it up.

There was applause again, warm and a little teary.
