Chapter 7: The Library

Cassidy's POV

On Monday morning, I went back to school for my last handoff before maternity leave.

Eli's call from Gail's porch was still in my head.

He had read me the back of a child's school photo, and I had told him to keep it safe and not to show it to anyone.

I had no idea yet who the girl was, only that Ron had hidden her in my purse.

The doctor had said light duty and no stairs.

The library was on the ground floor.

I was shelving picture books by the window when the front office called to say my husband was in the lobby.

"Tell him I'm busy," I said.

"He brought flowers," the secretary said. "A lot of them."

"I can't talk to him."

"I think he's already coming down the hall."

He was.

He came through the double doors carrying two dozen red roses, and behind him came a little parade of staff who had followed him from the office with their coffee.

It was drop-off, and the hall was full of parents walking their kids to class.

"Cass," Travis said. He said it loudly, so the whole hall could hear.

"Everyone, I'm sorry to interrupt. I'm Cassidy's husband. I just want to say something to my wife."

Nobody had asked him to.

A first-grade teacher stopped with her class lined up behind her.

Two mothers at the end of the hall stopped talking.

"I made a mistake," he said. "I got caught up in being a good friend to someone who needed help, and I forgot what mattered most. You, and our baby. I'm asking you to come home."

He held out the roses.

"Please," he said.

The children were staring at the flowers.

I looked at the face of the man I had been married to for ten years, and I knew what he was doing.
