Chapter 10: Room Six

Ines's POV

Sabine fell asleep at ten past five, with the magnesium running and her blood pressure coming down to something I could live with.

I stood at the foot of her bed for a full minute to be sure.

The strip was clean, and the nurse was at her side, and the resident would be back in ten.

I had ten minutes, and I had spent four of them already deciding what to do with them.

I had texted Roderick from the hall at half past four, when her pressure first turned, and now I walked into on-call room 6 with my heart going hard.

It was the same narrow room as the other, with the same thin mattress and a blue blanket folded at its foot, and a single lamp on the wall.

He was there before I had the door shut.

He had come up the back stairs and stood waiting by the lamp, and I closed the door softly behind me, and we stood without touching.

"I saw Bram," he said.

"I know. I heard him from the end of the hall."

"He offered me a roll of cash to treat Sabine like a VIP. Then he asked me to keep you away from him if you showed up."

I put my hands over my face and laughed until I had to lean on the wall.

"He asked you to hide his girlfriend's labor from his wife. From his wife, who's delivering it."
