Chapter 17: Soup
Roderick's POV
The charge nurse told me at seven on Tuesday morning, at the anesthesia desk, with her back to the hall.
"Pollard's lawyer sent a letter to the chief of staff," she said. "And to the state board."
She kept her voice low.
"He says Dr. Maldonado treated his child while in a conflict of interest."
She glanced down the hall.
"And that she left a laboring patient alone for long stretches."
I put down my coffee.
"She doesn't know," the nurse said. "The chief is going to tell her at nine. He's reading it now."
"Who else has seen it?"
"Everyone who was on that night. He's calling us in for statements."
She looked at me directly.
"He means the pager logs, Dr. Lyle. He knows exactly where she was."
I had not seen Ines since the garage.
She had not called, and I had not called her, because she had told me not to fix it.
A man who has already kept one thing from her does not get to choose the second.
I had spent two nights in my empty house counting what I owed.
