Chapter 18: Conflict of Interest

Ines's POV

Roderick stood on my porch with a paper bag in his arms and snow in his hair.

He looked like a man who expected the door to close.

"You smell like the deli," I said.

"I didn't know what you eat when you're sick."

"I'm not sick," I said.

"I know. I couldn't think what else to bring."

I looked at the bag.

The chief of staff had called me into his office at nine that morning and shown me the letter.

He told me, in a careful voice, that Dr. Lyle had been there at half past seven.

I had spent the whole day deciding what I would say.

"You went behind my back," I said.

"Yes."

"I told you not to fix it."

"You did, and I did it anyway." He didn't look away. "I'm sorry I went around you. I'm not sorry I went."

"You put a reprimand in your file."

"I put the truth in it. It's cheaper than what I owe you."

I wanted to be angrier.

I stood there with my hand on the door.

All my anger had gone to the same place as the cold in my fingers, and it was coming back slowly, with pain.

"I haven't forgiven October," I said.

"I know."

"Don't think a quart of soup buys it."

"I don't think anything buys it," Roderick said. "I think I stand where you can see me until you decide."
