He Left Me in the Snow for Her Labor, So I Delivered It novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Mile Marker
A year later, on the third Saturday in January, the snow came off Lake Erie sideways again.
The Thruway closed at nine, and the maternity units on the lakeshore went on diversion one by one, and Lakeview stayed open.
I was off call that night, for once, and I was riding in the cab of a county plow.
"You said you wanted to see it from up here," the plow driver said.
"I did."
"Well, here it is. Don't touch the levers."
She had asked us at Christmas.
Every year, she said, she ran the Thruway on the worst night of January, and a person who had been picked up off it ought to ride the road once as a passenger.
Roderick sat on my left with his arm along the seat behind my shoulders.
The heater roared, and a thermos of coffee rode between my boots.
Nothing in my life had been this easy for a long time.
"Exit 53," the plow driver said. "Coming up."
"I know."
"A mile past it is where I found you," she said.
"I remember."
She slowed the plow as the green sign slid out of the snow, and I looked out of the window at the shoulder.
There was a stalled car in the white at the next mile marker, with its hazards ticking.
Its driver's door hung open, and a man stood in the road waving both arms over his head.
