Chapter 28: The Meeting

Troy took the phone out of my hand and turned it face down on the step.

"That's her ring," he said. "Your mother's."

"It was."

"It still is."

The dog lifted his head off our feet and looked up the dune.

A light had come on in my father's window.

He was awake. He'd seen it too.

I didn't sleep.

At six I stood in my closet and looked at the clothes I'd left behind in May.

Cashmere. Silk. A navy suit my father bought me for a board dinner I never went to.

I put on the suit.

Then I put the yellow raincoat on over it.

Troy was asleep in the truck in the driveway with the seat tipped back.

I knocked on the glass.

"You don't have to come," I said.

He rubbed his eyes.

"Your father's golden boy burned my shed. I'd like to see the meeting."

My father had already gone. His car wasn't in the garage.

We took the station wagon.

Wexford Hotels headquarters was a white building on the water with the blue wave over the doors.

I'd been there a hundred times.

I'd never once parked there without calling somebody for help.
