Chapter 19: Four O'Clock
The card came to the ward at noon, delivered by a driver in a gray uniform.
It was cream stock, written by hand in a firm, old-fashioned script.
*Four o'clock. Come alone. Bring whatever you have.*
There was no signature.
Vaughn read it over my shoulder and went rigid.
"No."
"She won't open her door to you."
"She slapped you in front of ninety people."
"And this morning she asked Kendra where she bought a bear."
I printed the carrier file at the nurses' station, every page, and slid it into a plain folder.
My aunt sat with Sam.
Vaughn drove me to the gate of a brick house in Kenilworth, and he parked across the street with the engine running.
"One hour," he said. "Then I'm coming in."
"One hour."
The housekeeper let me in without a word.
She walked me through a hall I remembered from the memorial dinner, past the framed photographs, to a sitting room at the back.
Ansley's mother sat by the cold fireplace in a gray cardigan.
There was a tea tray, and she did not offer me any.
She looked smaller than she had at the funeral.
"Sit," she said.
I sat on the edge of the sofa.
"Kendra called me before dawn," she said. "Before the caseworker ever arrived at the ward. She said she had made a terrible confession to you both, and that you would use it against her."
"What did she confess?"
"That she took my daughter's last call. That Ansley said she loved me." Her mouth worked.
"She told me that on the phone at five in the morning. She told me what my own child said, for the first time in five years."
