Chapter 20: Two Million Dollars
Kendra found me in the hospital cafeteria at seven the next morning.
She wore a navy coat and no makeup, and her eyes were swollen from no sleep.
She was not allowed on the ward, but nobody had banned her from the building.
I saw her cross the room, and I turned my phone face down beside my tray.
I pressed the red circle with my thumb first.
I had learned something from a bear.
"May I?" she said, and sat before I answered.
She tore open a sugar packet and tipped it into a coffee she did not drink.
"Mother has taken my keys to the house," she said. "Did you know? I'm to stay at a hotel until Saturday."
"I'm sorry."
"No, you're not. You're delighted."
"What do you want, Kendra?"
"To make you an offer. Once. Please listen to all of it."
She leaned in.
"Take Sam and go home. Today. Tell Vaughn you need to be somewhere quiet while he recovers. Don't go to the gala."
"And?"
"I'll put two million dollars in an account in your name. The lake house paid off in perpetuity. A fund for his care."
"You'd pay me to disappear."
"I'd pay you to be sensible."
"And if I come on Saturday?"
Her smile did not move.
"Then I stand on that stage in front of four hundred people, and I tell them about three weeks of bruises. About two phone calls you let ring out. About a mother who hid her child from his father for five years."
"I didn't hide him. You burned the picture."
"Who will believe that?" She said it gently. "I'm the grieving sister. I run the foundation. I have a speech that has made grown men cry."
