Chapter 26: On the Steps
At noon the steps of the Pavilion were packed to the street.
Cameras stood three rows deep behind the rope, and the same photographers who had shouted my name the night before were silent now.
Vaughn stood at the podium in the plain black suit.
Ansley's mother stood on his right, in gray, with her hand flat on the wood.
I stood at the bottom of the steps with my aunt, who had come down from the lake that morning and had not stopped glaring at him since the car.
"Don't look so pleased," my aunt muttered. "He's not done anything yet."
"I know."
"He'd better do something."
Vaughn unfolded the third page.
"Ansley Lowell wrote this the night she died," he said. "Her sister read two pages of the letter at the funeral and kept the third. I'm going to read it to you now."
He read all of it.
He read the part about the railing, and the part about Geneva picking up, and the part that told Kendra to let me sleep.
His voice did not shake once.
When he finished, nobody in that crowd made a sound.
"I want to tell you what that page cost one woman," Vaughn said.
"Five years ago I stood beside Geneva Haskell at a grave, and her hands were empty, and I did not look at her."
"She was pregnant. I did not know it, and the reason I did not know it is that I never asked how she was."
A reporter in the front row stopped writing.
"I ended it in a parking lot, and within the hour I had a lawyer text her to make it final."
"When she mailed me a letter, I sent it back unopened, and I told myself that was strength."
