Chapter 11: Say It Out Loud
The Marlow feed store opened at seven, and by seven-ten it was full.
I knew most of the faces.
Farmers in canvas coats, two women from the church, the man who ran the tire shop, and a trio of teenagers in work gloves.
They all had phones in their hands, and they all stopped talking when I walked in.
I had two hundred and twelve comments to thank for that.
Hank came in behind me with a flatbed cart.
"I brought my own receipts," he announced.
"Hank," I said.
"In case anybody wants to see what a crazy veteran buys. Forty bags of layer feed and a salt lick."
"That's a lot of chickens," said a farmer by the register.
"It's a lot of everything," Hank said. "She asked me for forty, and I told her fifty."
Somebody laughed.
It wasn't an unkind laugh.
I put my hand on the counter and looked around the room.
"My husband posted something about me last night," I said. "Most of you read it."
Nobody answered.
"It said I'm unwell. That I'm threatening neighbors."
"I don't believe it," said one of the church women.
"Believe what you like. Here's what's true."
I kept my voice flat, the way I had once briefed a platoon.
"Two days ago, Brent forged my name on a contract to sell my grandfather's farm to a woman he's kept in a rented house for seven years. Yesterday he swore I was delusional, to get me committed. Last night he kicked my gate at two in the morning. The deputy arrested him. He's out on bail."
