Chapter 10: I'm Sorry, Dear
On Sunday afternoon I sat in Constance Corbin's sunroom with a brass key in my hand.
She had been home from the hospital since Saturday. She wore a gray cardigan and sat upright in a wicker chair, with a cane across her knees that she refused to touch.
Dolores waited in the car at the end of the drive. Nolan did not know I was there.
"Open the desk," Constance said.
It was a small oak writing desk under the window. The lock was stiff.
When it turned, the drawer slid out.
Inside lay a stack of white cards tied with a ribbon.
I knew them before I touched them.
"Ten," Constance said. "I wrote every one on the morning of your anniversary. I never signed my name, because I was a coward."
I looked at the top card. It said what the others said.
I'm sorry, dear.
"What are you sorry for?"
"For what I knew." She breathed in. "Under the cards."
I lifted them out.
At the bottom of the drawer lay a single envelope.
It was brown at the edges. One corner was black, and the paper curled where fire had touched it.
My name was on the front, written in a hand I had last seen on a slip of paper with a phone number.
Under it, Nolan had written: The girl in the yellow raincoat.
"Where did you get this?"
"Nolan had no address for you. He gave his letters to me and asked me to find you." Constance's voice shook. "I gave them to Preston, because Preston knew everyone."
"And?"
"The July after your wedding I went to his study to find a book. He had a fire going in July. He was burning letters. A whole shoebox."
