Chapter 13: The Footprints on the Sand
The steward did not look at me.
He held the leather book against his chest and kept his eyes on the stone.
"Open it," said Ligeia.
He opened it to a page marked with a ribbon.
"The queen's own words, recorded by me, the night before she died," said Ligeia. "She begged the court to forget her, so her child would never be hunted by the tide."
"I never said that," I said.
"You don't remember what you said. You told the Basin yourself, you had no past."
That was true, and it made my stomach turn.
Kyros stepped in front of me.
"Steward," he said. "You served my hall for thirty years."
"Yes, my lord."
"Look at me."
The steward lifted his eyes to Kyros's chin and no higher.
"Did my wife ask you to forget her?"
"She asked it of me, my lord. I heard it."
"Where?"
"In the, in the lower passage."
"Which night?"
"The dark moon."
"Which hour?"
The steward's mouth worked, and nothing came out.
"He is old and frightened," said Ligeia gently. "You are frightening him."
"I am asking him a question."
"You are a lord with no ring, asking a servant to call his regent a liar."
"Then I'll ask the eldest to put him to the Basin," said Kyros.
The eldest elder lifted her hand.
"A witness may be put to the water. If he lies, the water will know."
The steward went the color of ash.
He took one step back, and I saw how badly he did not want to go near that pool.
Ligeia saw it too.
"The court has had a long and terrible day," she said smoothly. "The steward is no young man. I move that we rest until dusk."
