Chapter 8: Corwin's Road
Corwin's POV
I rode out of the Fen without speaking to her.
Oswin had stopped me on the barn step with the Moot's summons and a hand on my arm.
"Let her sleep," he said. "She's had a long week. We can send word from the road."
I did what he said.
I had done what he said for eleven years, and it had never once occurred to me to ask why.
Forty wolves rode around us in a loose square, grey cloaks and iron heels.
The causeway gave way to open heath, and the wind blew cold off the marsh.
I kept my eyes on my horse's ears and tried not to think about the rug.
I thought about it anyway.
Her hands holding mine down, and the sound she'd made when she came, and the way she had said once and meant it.
My wolf lay in my chest with his nose to the floor.
He hadn't been calm since the night she signed.
He was worse now, because he'd had her, and she had sent him out into the rain.
"You're quiet," Oswin said, riding up beside me.
"I'm thinking."
"About her."
"About the barn," I lied.
He laughed warmly.
"It's all right to be angry, brother. She hid it nine weeks. Nine weeks, Corwin. I'd have thrown the paper at her myself."
I looked at him.
He was the first friend I'd ever had.
He had sat with me on the stairs of Kestrel lodge the morning after the fire, a boy of twenty-four with ash on his sleeve, and told me he would not leave.
He hadn't.
"Tell me about the afternoon," I said. "I want to hear it again."
