Chapter 13: What Dillon Did

"I don't know what he did," I said into the microphone. "You tell them."

Chloe had been waiting for exactly that.

She turned to face the tables with both hands over her heart.

"Eleven years ago today, Dillon Lowry killed my mother and my father."

Two hundred women made the same small sound.

"He was driving. He looked at his phone. They were in the back seat, and they never got out."

A spoon hit a plate.

"And then his family made it disappear," Chloe said. Her voice shook beautifully. "His father's lawyers sealed it. I was eighteen. I thought it was an accident. I buried them believing it."

"Chloe," Dillon said. It was almost nothing, a croak.

"I only found out at twenty-four. I have never said it out loud until today."

I knew she was lying about something.

I had watched her face in the lobby when the sob switched off.

She had not been shocked at the luncheon. She had been waiting for her cue.

The women at table two had turned to stare at Dillon with their mouths open.

Sylvia sat down hard and put her face in her hands.

I put the microphone in its stand.

"Ladies," I said. "The event director is closing the room. Lunch is on the club. Please collect your coats."

"Gillian," Vaughn said, from table seven.

"Keep my mother here."

I walked down the aisle, took Dillon by the sleeve, and pulled him through the kitchen door.

The kitchen staff flattened themselves against the steel counters.

I took him on through the back, into the service corridor with the dish racks, and shut the door.

He stood against the wall with his hands hanging.
