Chapter 17: The Letter

Gillian's POV

My flat smelled of a place I had not slept in for a week.

Vaughn stood in my kitchen with his coat still on, and my bruised hand in both of his.

He had wrapped my fingers in a frozen bag of peas.

The head of his security team had taken the cardboard box away in a clean plastic sleeve.

"Every page," she had said at the door. "A lawyer will see it before noon."

Now it was six in the morning, and the sky over the rooftops was only just turning grey.

"Where is it?" Vaughn asked.

"You don't have to stay."

"Gillian."

"The drawer by the bed."

I went and opened it.

The envelope lay under a box of spare keys, thick and cream, with my name on the front in a hand I knew from a hundred margin notes.

It had never been opened.

I carried it into the kitchen and put it on the counter between us.

"You said you didn't want me to read it with you here."

"I said I wanted you to read it when you were ready."

"I'm ready."

"Then I'll make coffee," he said.

He turned his back and filled the kettle, and I slit the envelope with a butter knife.

Three pages, written on the hotel's own letterhead in black ink.

I read.

Gillian,

You have had an hour of my time every Monday for six years, and I spent it talking about occupancy rates.

I did not propose to you because of the work.

I did it badly, with a list, because I do not know how to ask for the thing I want most.

I wanted you in my office for six years.

I wanted you at my table after.

I will not tell you that Dillon Lowry is the wrong man. You will find that out or you won't.

I will tell you that if you marry him, I will not stand in your way, and I will never stop being a fool who listens for your footsteps on the forty-first floor.
