Chapter 10: Brooke Tells Her

I did not sit down on the bench.

I stood on the path with my hands in my sweater pockets, and in the right one my thumb found the red button on my phone and pressed it.

"Congratulations," I said.

Brooke laughed, delighted.

"You're not even going to ask?"

"Ask what?"

"Whose it is."

"It's Cade's," I said. "I watched the video ten minutes ago."

Her smile slipped for half a second.

"What video?"

"The one from the lake house. The Wednesday before last Thanksgiving, with you in his lap."

She stared at me.

Then she settled back on the bench, crossed her legs, and smoothed her gray coat over her stomach.

"Well," she said. "That saves time."

"For what?"

"I came to make you an offer, Hallie. A kind one."

"I'm listening."

"Give him back."

I waited.

"I know you married that man to hurt Cade. It worked. Congratulations. Now go back to the Chatsworths' bed and tell everyone you were upset, and you'll have a nice divorce in a year, and nobody will remember you."

"And Cade?"

"Cade and I marry at the courthouse on Friday."

"With what birth certificate?" I asked.

Brooke's mouth tightened.

"I ordered a new one. Express."

"Lovely."

"I'm having his baby," she said. "Claudia already adores me."

"Claudia knew about you."

"Claudia has known since I was nineteen," Brooke said. "She thinks I'm better for him than you ever were. She just wanted the Chatsworth name near the family first. You were useful for that."

I kept my voice steady.

"Useful."

"Three years of dinners at the club with the right people. You think that was for you?" She tilted her head. "Cade needed a girlfriend with a name Eleanor liked. Your grandfather had that name. I picked you."

"You picked me."

"Sophomore year I told him, find a nice, quiet one with an old family. He did. He's very obedient."
