He Let Her Rip Our License, So I Married Another Man novel · Chapter 23 of 24

Chapter 23: Room B

Benedict found me on my grandfather's dock at sunset, with my feet in the water.

I had come down alone to think about the clerk's call.

The old sailboat rocked at its mooring beside me, with Walter's name still painted on the stern.

I heard his steps on the boards and did not turn around.

"My grandmother has been discharged to a recovery suite," he said. "She's furious about the wheelchair. She says she'll be at the county office on Friday if she has to be carried."

"She'll be carried."

"By me."

"By the green-jacket friend," I said. "He's strong. He volunteered."

Benedict sat down beside me on the edge of the dock, in his good trousers, and took off his shoes.

He put his feet in the lake beside mine.

"It's freezing," he said.

"Yes."

"I'm doing this for you."

"I know."

The water moved around our ankles.

A loon called somewhere out past the point.

"I want to say something," I said. "Before you do whatever you drove here to do."

"I haven't planned anything."

"You've been planning since the car."

His mouth twitched.

"Say it."

"I want to do it at the same counter," I said. "Same room, same judge, same clerk. Not because of what happened there. Because that's where I decided. I stood at a desk on a Friday and called a number, and everything I have now started with that."

"You want to marry me again."

"I want to marry you on purpose."

He was quiet for a long moment.

Then he reached into his jacket and took out a small box.
