Chapter 5: Not Ill
Luca ended the call.
Nobody in the office said anything.
Chiara found she was gripping the arm of the chair.
"Is that man dangerous?" she asked Dr. Coombs.
"He is certainly dangerous to your recovery," Dr. Coombs said. "That is not the same thing, and I do not know which one you are asking."
"I'm asking if I should be afraid."
Taylor stood up.
"You should be hungry," she said. "It's ten in the morning and you haven't eaten. Come on. I know a place."
She took Chiara's elbow and walked her out the back door, past the loading dock, to a rusted blue hatchback with a cat hair blanket on the passenger seat.
Chiara got in.
She did not look back at the clinic.
The café was four blocks from Taylor's flat, a narrow room with six tables and a chalkboard menu.
Taylor ordered two breakfast burritos and a pot of coffee.
Chiara ate half of hers and discovered she was starving.
"You're doing great," Taylor said. "Look at that. Chewing. Swallowing."
"I'm not a toddler."
"You're a woman who was brainwashed by her own doctor last night and ran across half the county in the dark. I'm allowed to be proud."
"I didn't run. I walked and then I ran."
"Which is the same thing, but with more feelings."
Chiara laughed.
It surprised her, and she stopped, and then Taylor laughed too.
The bell over the door rang.
A black SUV had pulled up outside, two wheels on the curb.
Three men got out. The broad one from the lobby was first.
