Ronan's POV

I waited for her in the lot outside Brazos Treatment Center.

I leaned on a rented sedan with my arms folded and my eyes on the front doors.

She had asked me to stay outside.

I had said yes, because I had learned in four days that Nessa Quinlan kept a tally of promises.

I hadn't been counted on in years.

It was a strange thing to want.

I watched the doors for twenty minutes.

When a black sedan pulled into the space beside mine, I did not look surprised, because I had been expecting it since the airport.

The elder with the folder got out.

He was in his sixties and silver-haired, with a Cedar Ridge pin on his lapel.

He had the careful look of a man who had spent his life being polite to Alphas.

"Alpha Mercer," he said. "A moment."

"You have it."

"I'd like to speak plainly, if I may."

"I'd like that too."

He glanced at the clinic doors.

"Alpha Haught has authority to offer you something. He has not asked me to say so, but I believe he'd approve."

"Offer it."

"A new border treaty. Cedar Ridge gives up its deed to the Guadalupe River ranch land, which your pack has been fighting over since your father's time. Mesquite gets the whole stretch."

I said nothing.

My father had died before the fight was won, and I had spent twelve years carrying it.
