Chapter 17: The Lobby
The Mesquite elders voted at noon, with me standing in the middle of their hall.
There were five of them at a long oak table, and two of them would not look at the disc on my collarbone.
"The notice says you took an Alpha's heir," the eldest said. She was a small woman with white braids and a very steady voice. "Do you deny it?"
"No."
"The notice says you stole four hundred and twelve thousand dollars."
"I deny that. I never touched an account, and I never signed a card."
"Then who did?"
"The woman who has run those accounts for nine years."
The two elders on the left exchanged a glance.
"Words," one of them said.
"Then give me until the hearing," I said. "Give me a clerk's statement, in person, before the council. If I don't bring it, take the mark off yourselves."
The small woman studied me for a long moment.
She looked at Ronan, standing against the wall with his arms folded, and he did not say a word.
"Three to two," she said at last. "The mark stays until the hearing. Bring us the clerk."
I walked out of the hall with my knees weak, and I did not let anyone see it.
Joanie had the clerk by seven the next morning.
We met in the Brazos lobby, because the clerk refused to meet anywhere else.
She was a heavy woman in her fifties in a gray cardigan, and she kept twisting a tissue in both hands.
Two families sat in the waiting chairs, and an old man was asleep under a newspaper.
"I don't want to be here," she said.
"I know," Joanie said, and she touched the woman's elbow. "But you called me at midnight."
