Chapter 4: Three Hundred Thousand

The air in the field changed.

Two Alphas were standing in it, and neither one was going to look away first.

Slade's pressure rolled out across the flowers, heavy and cold.

My knees wanted to bend.

I locked them and stayed on my feet, but my vision swam at the edges.

Then Ronan's pressure came across the grass, and it was different.

It was dry and steady, and it held me up without my asking.

My vision cleared and I found I could stand straight.

"That's enough," Ronan said mildly. "You're making her dizzy."

Slade pulled his power back an inch.

He did not look at me when he did it.

"Mercer, this is a Cedar Ridge matter."

"She's standing in a Mesquite field, and she hasn't asked for you to be in it."

"She signed a contract with me."

"And she's told you she wants out of it. I heard her. So did two hundred people at the airport."

The older elder on the gravel cleared his throat.

"Alpha Mercer, the Lone Star Council holds that a chosen-mate contract can only be dissolved by the Luna filing, and then only if her Alpha doesn't contest."

"I know the rule."

"Alpha Haught is contesting."

"Then it goes to a hearing," Ronan said. "I know that rule too."

He glanced at me.

"Texas hears disputes involving a guest on neutral ground. Austin's council hall, nine days from now. Cedar Ridge can send whoever it likes."
