Chapter 6: The Guest Mark

I showed Ronan the photo in the guest house kitchen, with Cara's empty tin on the counter between us.

"Kin match," I read. "What does that mean?"

"In a wolf registry, it means the donor shares blood with the patient."

"Cara and I are the only family either of us has."

"Were you tested?"

"They tested me in the first week. I wasn't a match."

"Then it wasn't you."

He put his thumb on the line that said SEALED BY ADMIN.

"Someone with authority over the registry locked the donor's name. Someone who didn't want it read."

"Peyton has authority over the pack's accounts. Not the hospital's registry."

"Then she has a friend who does."

I pushed my hair back with both hands.

Cara had been sick since she was fourteen.

In eight years, nobody had ever said she had blood kin in the registry.

"Joanie's pulling the full file," I said. "She said it might take a few days."

"Then you have a few days." He rubbed his jaw. "And a hearing in nine."

"And no lawyer."

"You have one. Mine."

"I can't pay him."

"You won't have to."

"Everything has a price, Ronan."

I said it more sharply than I meant to.

He didn't flinch.

He reached into his coat pocket and set a small silver disc on the counter between us.

It was the size of a coin, on a thin chain, with a running wolf stamped into its face.

"That's a Mesquite guest mark. It tells every wolf in Texas that you're under my roof and my protection. Anyone from Cedar Ridge who puts a hand on you breaks the law, and I get to answer it."
