Chapter 14: The Stairwell

"I never opened your chart," Gina said. "Not once. I couldn't."

"I know."

"It's the kid's insurance, Deenie."

"I know. When's the meeting?"

"Tomorrow at eight. With administration. And somebody from compliance."

"I'll be there."

"You can't come to my write-up."

"Watch me."

That evening I called the charge nurse from Abe's unit, the one who'd called security on Holden.

She didn't need it explained.

"I'm off at seven," she said. "I'll come up in my scrubs. I want them to see the scrubs."

The administration offices were on the sixth floor, all carpet and framed watercolors.

Gina's manager sat on one side with a printed letter.

Next to her sat a vice president in a gray suit and a woman from compliance with a laptop.

Gina sat across from them with her hands folded so they wouldn't shake.

I sat on one side of her. The charge nurse sat on the other, in navy scrubs, badge clipped on.

"Ms. Prewitt," the vice president said. "This is an internal personnel matter."

"It's about my records," I said. "So it's my matter."

I put two pieces of paper on the table.

"This is my request for my own chart. I signed it at the records window the morning after I buried my daughter. The clerk initialed it. Right there."

The woman from compliance pulled it toward her.

"And this is my request to the city for the ambulance records. Through my lawyer. Gina has never seen my chart. Check the access log. It shows everyone who opened it."

The compliance woman was already typing.

"Her name isn't in the log," she said at last.

"Whose is?" said the vice president.

"The night staff on the fourteenth. The OB team. Records, on the day of the request."
