Chapter 28: After
The reporter held the phone out to me in the lobby.
"My editor wants to publish it tonight," she said. "The whole file. I told her I'd ask you first."
"Why ask me? It's public now."
"Because your voice is on it."
I thought about the long low sound at the back of the midwife's call.
The sound you only make once.
"Publish his call," I said. "The one at 6:08. All of it. Every word he says."
"And yours?"
"Cut me out. Nobody gets to hear me like that. Not even to be on my side."
By nine that night, Holden's voice was on every phone in the country.
Hi there. Family's transporting. Thank you so much. You have a good night.
On Friday the listing was pulled.
On Monday the board removed Holden as chief executive, in a statement three sentences long.
On Tuesday his lawyer filed one page in Keefe versus Keefe.
Plaintiff voluntarily dismisses all claims.
On Wednesday the board announced that reconciliation would no longer restrict card access for anyone. Effective that evening.
