Chapter 13: Three Inches of Door
Min-jun kept his hand on the door and his body in the gap.
"Brother-in-law," he said. "You have a gift for hours."
"I have a gift for noses." Jae-won held up the wine. "Omega scent, a month along or less. Warm bread, milk, a little iron. My mother's maids smelled the same when she carried my sister."
"It's a northern tonic."
"Is it?"
"The healers give it in rut season. It sweetens the scent for a time. I took a double dose for the road."
The lie came out smooth and the seal stayed quiet.
It was a lie about the cause, and the god allowed those.
Jae-won tilted his head.
"How inventive. And the bite on your neck? An omega would have made that mark on a wolf, and my brother is no wolf."
"I bit him," said a voice behind Min-jun.
Seo-jun had come to the door in his trousers and a loose shirt, with his hair standing up from the pillow.
He put his hand flat on the wood above Min-jun's head.
"And I'd thank you to stop sniffing my husband."
"Brother." Jae-won's smile widened. "How modern of you."
"Good night, Jae-won."
"The Midwinter Court sits in three days. Father's physician will be there, and he has a very fine nose." Jae-won pressed the bottle into Min-jun's free hand. "Sleep well, both of you."
He walked off down the corridor with his lantern swinging.
Seo-jun shut the door and shot the bolt.
Then he turned around.
"Three inches of door," he said.
"What?"
"You opened it three inches. You stood in the gap and answered for the both of us, and you never once looked at me."
"I was protecting you."
"You decide everything for me." His voice was shaking. "The carriage, the letters, the pass. Every night I find out a day late that I was handled."
