Chapter 10: The Valle
The wedding was in the same hall on Boston Road where I had put my scarf on Ermal's plate.
I stood in the doorway in a green dress and looked at the long table and felt my stomach turn.
Lule took my arm.
"Chin up," she said. "It's only a room."
"It's the room."
"It's a room with a bride in it. Come."
She walked me down the hall past the same eighty chairs, and nobody looked away this time.
The old man in the gray cap rose from the head of the family table with his cane.
His granddaughter was the bride, a pretty girl in a lace veil who was crying already.
His son, the crew foreman, was the bride's father, a wide man in a rented tuxedo.
He took my hand in both of his and kissed the back of it.
"My brother worked eleven years under Luan Prenga," he said in my ear. "I know who stood in that room."
"Thank you."
"Sit with the women, daughter. Sit at the head."
They had set a chair for me at the head of the women's table.
