Chapter 12: Easter Bread
The old man's house on Stillwell Avenue was dark except for the kitchen.
I had taken Luan's Ford keys off the hook while he slept, and I had driven there through empty streets at half past four.
The back door was unlocked.
Lule stood at the long wooden table in her black cardigan with her sleeves pushed to the elbow.
A great bowl of dough sat in front of her, and there was flour on her hands, her apron and her cheek.
On the stove a pot of eggs rolled in water the color of rust.
Red eggs for Easter, dyed in onion skins, the way they did it in Shkodër.
"Wash your hands," she said. "You'll knead."
I washed my hands.
She slid the bowl across to me, and I dug my fists into the dough.
It was warm and heavy.
"Zef is at the church with Ermal for the vigil," she said at last. "They won't be back before noon."
"Why did you call me, Lule?" I said.
"I could not sleep."
"You never sleep."
"No." She wiped her hands on her apron. "But last night I did not want to."
