Chapter 9: Drita's POV
Drita's POV
Ermal had written wear it, so I wore it.
I tied the black scarf around my throat over a red wool coat and left my hair down.
He had not said where.
The card club on Morris Park Avenue was a storefront with brown paper over the glass and a buzzer by the door.
Luan parked the Ford half a block away and did not turn off the engine.
"You walk out if it goes wrong," he said.
"I know."
"Drita," he said.
"I know."
I pressed the buzzer.
A thick man opened the door a hand's width and looked at the scarf.
"Family?" he said.
"Gjoka."
He let me in.
The room was long and low and blue with smoke.
A dozen tables, a bar at the back, and every chair taken.
The talk stopped.
I walked to the bar.
A man in a gray cardigan stood behind it, polishing a glass.
He was the manager.
"I'm here for the old man's envelope," I said.
"Not for you."
"I'm a Gjoka. I carry my father-in-law's word."
"The envelope goes to Ermal, or it goes to the family's man." He set the glass down. "You're a woman at a bar."
"The family's man was Luan Prenga," I said.
"Was."
"Then Zef Gjoka has no man here, and no envelope. Is that what you want me to tell him?"
His eyes flicked to the room.
"Tell him what you like."
I looked at the manager for a long moment.
Then I turned my back on him, crossed the room, and sat down in an empty chair at the table nearest the door.
I laid my hands on the green felt and folded them.
"I'll wait," I said.
Nobody answered.
A man at the next table cleared his throat and dealt a card.
I sat in that chair for twenty minutes by the clock above the bar.
Smoke curled in the light.
A dealer coughed.
The manager polished the same glass four times, and put it down, and polished it again.
