Chapter 10: Soup and a Sword
Sam's POV
The text came at ten to six in the morning, while I was in the call room trying to eat a granola bar standing up.
The deacon left for Florida. Margo's company sent the car. Constance has hired someone to find him. I can't sleep. Sorry, I know you're working.
I read it twice, which I do not usually do with texts.
Then I wrote back: I'm awake. Cardiac floors don't sleep. Are you eating?
She answered with a photo of a piece of dry toast.
I looked at it for longer than a man with a patient waiting should.
At seven, I did what I should have done three weeks ago and pulled June Hargrove's chart on the screen.
Under emergency contacts there were two names.
The first was Kerry Hargrove, daughter.
The second was Margo Winslow, daughter (family friend), added the morning of the surgery, with a signed release that let her receive every update on June's condition.
The signature on the release was June's.
The handwriting looked careful and a little frightened.
I called patient registration myself.
"Remove the second contact and cancel the release," I told the woman who picked up. "I'll have Mrs. Hargrove sign the new form this afternoon."
"Doctor, that's not usually something you handle."
"Today it is."
I went down to June's room and explained what I'd found.
She read the form I'd brought, took my pen and signed it without a word.
"Margo knew when I was home alone," she said. "She knew when they let me out. She'd ring the doorbell a minute after Kerry left for school."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry, Doctor. Be around."
She said it kindly, and she looked at me for a second too long, and I went back upstairs and operated on a stranger's mitral valve with more attention than it strictly required.
