Dee went home at ten, with the roses in her arms and a look at me that said she'd be asking questions in the morning.
Nathaniel walked me up the back stairs to the room over the shop, as he had said he would on Day 2.
I unlocked my door.
Neither of us went in.
"Room 1104," I said.
He went still on the landing.
"The clerk told me this afternoon, when I left the phone on your desk." I kept my voice flat. "She said it had been held in the name of Mrs. Holloway for a year. She thought I knew."
"Sylvie."
"Say it."
"I held it for a year." He did not look away. "Every month she asked if she should release it. Every month I told her no."
"For me."
"For whoever left."
"So I was a plan." It came out harder than I had meant. "You stood at the curb with an umbrella, and you'd already paid. You'd been waiting for a woman to be hurt so you could be the man who caught her."
"No."
"Don't tell me no. I watched you pay the driver."
"I didn't know it would be you." He took a step toward me, and stopped. "I didn't know you at all. I wanted the Holloways to lose something, and I thought it would be funny. And then you came out of those doors with a coat over your arm and a suitcase and your chin up, and I stopped caring what I wanted from them."
"That's a nice speech."
"It isn't a speech. I've been hungry since you came into my lobby, and I have been behaving, and it's killing me."
The landing light buzzed.
I looked at his mouth.
