Chapter 19: The Vote

The boardroom of the Holloway Grand had a long oak table, eleven leather chairs and a portrait of Harrison's grandfather.

At four o'clock on Wednesday, I stood against the wall under it with a coffee I did not want.

The board woman had asked me to come.

"As a witness to the lease," she said.

Helen took the head of the table.

She had changed into a fresh cream suit, and her hair was perfect, and she looked at no one.

Harrison sat at her right hand with his folder closed in front of him.

"Let us begin," Helen said. "The question is my son's fitness to continue as chief executive. I have his leave of absence on the record. I move that it be extended, and I move that I be confirmed as acting chief, with the trust's votes behind me."

"Second," said a man at the far end, quickly.

"Before we vote," Harrison said.

His voice was level.

Helen turned her head.

"Harrison."

"I have a document." He opened the folder and slid a few pages down the table to the board woman. "The family trust was written for my protection when my father died. I was twenty-six. I'm thirty-three. Under its own terms, a beneficiary can revoke it with his lawyer present."

A man in a grey suit rose at the back of the room.

He was the lawyer, and he nodded to the board.

"I revoked it an hour ago," Harrison said. "The shares are mine. I'll vote them myself."

Nobody in the room moved.

Helen's hand lay flat on the table, and I watched it close.

"You wouldn't," she said.

"I did, Mom."

"After everything I've done for you."

"Yes," Harrison said. "After that."

It was the quietest thing I had ever heard him say.

The board woman cleared her throat.

"Then I think the order of business changes," she said. "I move that Helen Holloway be removed as chair of this board, on the grounds of the lease termination, which the records show she signed on a backdated form, and the conduct in her notebook, which this board has now read."
