Chapter 13: The Price of a Table
By Friday night the gala invitation was propped against the napkin holder at Sasha's bar.
Nobody had a plan that fit it.
"Ten thousand dollars a table," Sasha said. She had read the small print on the back twice. "Ten seats. Paid for in advance."
"I don't need a table," I said.
"You need a name on a card. Security can throw out a woman with no invitation." She tapped the paper. "They can't throw out a woman whose card is already at table four."
"Marisol runs the guest list."
"Marisol runs the list of who's invited. The hotel runs the list of who paid."
Dahlia sat on the last stool with her real drink at last, and she raised two fingers, the way she had in my mother's robe.
"My studio sponsored the raffle last year," she said. "I get two seats. I'll bring you as my plus-one."
"And be a plus-one for the rest of the night?"
"You'd rather be a guest. I get it." She shrugged. "I only have two seats."
I looked at the counter. I had three hundred and forty dollars, and I had spent sixty of it on groceries.
"Then two," I said. "Me and whoever Dahlia says I am."
Sasha opened her mouth to argue, and the door opened behind us.
Gabriel came in smelling of cold air, with his hands in his jacket pockets.
He did not sit. He took a fat white envelope out of his jacket and laid it on the bar in front of me.
"Ten thousand, four hundred," he said. "The hotel will hold table four under your name. I called them this afternoon."
