Chapter 6: The Study Closet

The study closet was built for coats, and it held a vacuum, two umbrellas and now both of us.

Gabriel pulled the door shut behind him until it barely clicked.

He had carried the folded ladder in with him. It leaned against my knees.

The vent cover was back on the ceiling. He had pressed it into place before he came down, and I had not seen him do it.

I stood with my back against the shelves and the black phone in my cardigan pocket.

Gabriel stood in front of me, because there was nowhere else for him to stand.

Footsteps crossed the hall.

The study door opened and the light came on.

A thin line of it showed through the slats of the closet door and fell across Gabriel's chest.

I could see every button on his shirt.

Rafael's voice came from the desk.

"I know what time it is," he said. "I said I'd call you when I was alone."

A chair creaked.

I held my breath. Gabriel's chest rose slowly against mine, and he did not make a sound.

"She hasn't signed," Rafael said. "She read the back of the mover's order, of all things. She did it in front of the neighbors."

A pause.

"No. I don't need the lawyer yet. Friday is Friday."

I could feel Gabriel's heartbeat now. It was slow and heavy, and I could feel it through two layers of cotton.

"Her father signed in one night," Rafael said. "He was sick and scared and he signed whatever I put in front of him. She'll do the same. She just needs another push."

My hands closed into fists against my sides.
