Chapter 13: Get in the Car

Eli's hand went to his pocket and closed on the letter.

"It's him," he said. "It's my father."

Laurence was already moving.

"Stay here. I'll deal with him."

"Laurence, wait."

Laurence stopped.

"I got this at breakfast," Eli said, and held out the letter. "I was going to tell you. I'm telling you now."

Laurence read it in a glance.

His face went hard and white, and his thumb went to his watch.

"Rule two," he said, very quietly. "We'll talk about that later. I'm going down."

"Please let me."

"Eli."

"If you go, I'm your servant standing behind you." Eli's voice shook. "I need to see if I can stand in front of him by myself. Ask me. Don't tell me."

Laurence shut his eyes.

He stood there for a long moment.

"May I watch from the drive?" he said at last.

"Yes."

"If he raises his voice, I'm coming."

"Yes," Eli said. "Thank you."

He walked down the front steps and across the gravel.

It was a long walk.

He kept his eyes on the line of beeches.
